(TAMPA, Fla.) -- New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter is on the mend as he recovers from ankle surgery. He fractured his left ankle during Game 1 of last season’s American League Championship series against the Detroit Tigers when he dove for a ground ball.
“I’m right where I am supposed to be up until this point,” Jeter said at a news conference Sunday. “The ankle has healed perfectly and now it’s just a matter of getting everything else in shape.”
The 38-year-old Jeter expects to be ready for opening day on Monday, April 1st when the Bronx Bombers play host to their arch-rivals, the Boston Red sox.
Last year in his 18th season with the Yankees, Jeter batted .216 with 15 home runs, 58 RBIs and 99 runs.
